Disability Services and Programs for Students at SBCC (DSPS)

DSPS provides accommodations and educational support to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to instructional programs. We help you by:

  • designing educational access so that students with disabilities have every reasonable opportunity to meet their goals,
  • providing educational support so that students with disabilities can demonstrate their skills
  • empowering students with disabilities so that they are independent, interdependent and integrated into our global community.

We also:

  • Provide a process for SBCC students to request accommodation for disability.
  • Ensure reasonable accommodations for SBCC students with disabilities.
  • Provide programs to support the education of students with disabilities.

Assistance League of Santa Barbara

The Assistance League of Santa Barbara is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that develops and implements philanthropic programs to benefit children and adults in Santa Barbara County. 

  • Bear H.U.G.S: “Huggy Bears” have been distributed for the purpose of comforting children and adults in severe trauma situations. Family Learning Program: Provides tutoring, mentoring and support to participating children and their families. Fostering Friends: Helps emancipating(ed) foster teens make the transition from foster care to independent living by partnering with local agencies to provide teens with clothing for school and work. Operation School Bell: Children are identified by the area schools administration and provided with clothing, books, backpacks and health kits. Santa Barbara Smiles: Focuses on dental health education for low-income children and adults in Santa Barbara and provides dental hygiene kits and educational activity booklets to children and adults who attend the Eastside Family Dental Clinic. Teen School Bell and Operation Prom Dress: Helps with clothing Jr. High and High school age children.

CHILD WELFARE SERVICES, SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

  • ABOUT: Train licensed foster parent & licenses adoptive parents in the County of Santa Barbara. 
  • RESOURCES: Child Welfare Services offers an Orientation and Classes for persons interested in becoming a licensed foster parent and or adoptive parent. Becoming a licensed foster parent/ adoptive parent legally allows you to care for children in your home. Financial assistance is available to help offset the cost of parenting.

CYC - CALIFORNIA YOUTH CONNECTION

  • ABOUT: CYC is a non-profit organization that was created and lead by current and emancipated foster youth. There are over 30 CYC chapters state wide that gives foster youth age 14-24 an opportunity to learn leadership skills, empowerment, and a sense of unity.  By working as one, CYC will change the system that raised them.

FAMILY CARE NETWORK, INC.

  • ABOUT: Mission is to enhance the wellbeing of children and families in partnership with our community. 
  • RESOURCES: The Family Care Network provides 17 distinct programs within five service divisions:Therapeutic Foster Care (North County);Family Support Services (North County); Transitional Housing Services: THP-Plus (Transitional Housing Placement Plus Services program): Affordable, safe, secure, supportive transitional housing program. ILP (Independent Living Program): For foster youth ages 14-??, programs and services that help young people develop the skills and knowledge they need to support their own independence. Prevention and Early Intervention Services;Community-Linked Services.

FOSTER AND KINSHIP CARE EDUCATION, SBCC

  • ABOUT: The Foster/Kinship Care Education (FKCE) Program is a statewide program funded through the California Community College Chancellors Office, providing a variety of training programs for Foster/Resource Parents (parent education), and specialized training for relative caregivers - for FREE.

GUARDIAN SCHOLARS SBCC 

  • ABOUT: This special club is for former Foster Youth and other students without parental support. There are many students in the situation and currently only 1% of foster youth ever graduate from college. This club was created to help change that. Guardian Scholars brings a group of young adults together to support one another to succeed both in college and life. If you were in the Foster Care system, or just on your own at a young age...students without family support this club could be for you.

  • ABOUT: The UCSB Guardian Scholars Program supports the academic and personal success for students who have been part of the foster care system; Participate in advocacy efforts both on campus and statewide to promote awareness of issues affecting foster youth.

ROTARY CLUB OF SANTA BARBARA

  • ABOUT: The foundation has donated funds to programs and organizations of Santa Barbara designed to improve the quality of life for youth, seniors, and the disadvantaged as well as organizations that provide art, music, theater, school programs, and scholarships. 
  • RESOURCES: Foster Children Giving Program: For close to 10 years our Club has raised funds for the purchase of Christmas gifts for the foster children in the Santa Barbara area.

YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES YMCA

  • ABOUT: The Youth and Family Services branch is the social service arm of the Channel Islands YMCA and reaches into many sectors of the Santa Barbara, Goleta and Isla Vista community providing comprehensive services to the children, youth, young adults and their families.
  • RESOURCES: Noah’s Anchorage Youth Crisis Shelter: 8 bed licensed group home that provides temporary foster care as well as shelter for runaway and homeless youth. The Shelter is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. My Home: A collaborative program with the Santa Barbara Housing Authority that provides transitional housing and on-site case management, as well as life skills, employment, education and counseling services for emancipated foster youth ages 18-21.Support and Outreach Services: S.O.S. teams reach out to youth living on the streets, offering basic needs assistance, counseling and case management. Isla Vista Teen Center: Quality after school programs, enrichment opportunities and recreation for young people grades 6-12.
