Meet Edgar Alvarez

Welcome to our new Resident Librarian!

Edgar Alvarez is a recent Master of Library and Information Studies program graduate.

What are some of your favorite books?

It’s so hard to choose one, but here are a few: A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami; Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac; Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell; and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey.

What are you currently reading?

Currently I’m reading Mexico City Blues poetry by American Beat writer Jack Kerouac and Blood in My Eye by George L. Jackson, an African American revolutionary who writes about the prison system, Marxism, American Fascism, and class struggle.

Why did you decide to become a librarian? 

My initial decision to become a librarian was primarily due to my love for literature, but later on in my educational path it became about being a tool and resource to help students achieve their academic goals, fostering innovation and creativity, and taking part in the dialectic intellectual exchange between academics (both students and professionals!)

Tell us something interesting about yourself:

When I’m not working here in the library or staring into the pages of a new book, I like to write poetry and journal. I also love to travel so I take lots of pictures when I’m out in nature, hiking or just hanging out by the beach. I’m very passionate about film photography (35 mm) and would like to make my own dark room soon! I’m also an avid vinyl record collector and my collection ranges from Blues to Jazz, Folk, Rock and much more! Lastly, I’m a huge Dodgers fan hoping they can make it back to the World Series this year!
